Having an autistic child was the spark that made me question how we as western-trained doctors and healers approach health and disease. While I have a deep respect for the wealth of treatment options we can offer from our Western approach, I also have amassed an understanding and command of several complementary and alternative approaches to healing and wellness.

In my study, practice, and application of acupuncture, yoga, myofascial work, and meditation, I have tapped into a wealth of alternative modalities that often hold the key to helping a person finally experience the health and happiness they are striving for.

I am a practicing, board certified Emergency Physician and Fellow of the American College of Emergency Physicians. I also have extensive training in acupuncture, yoga, myofascial techniques, and meditation. My passion for understanding connections between these diverse approaches to wellness fuels my ongoing pursuit to learn more about how they work and why they are important for more healers to understand and utilize.

My work and study spans many venues. I see patients in an urgent care setting in Portland, Maine, and also work with patients and clients privately through my practice, Medicine Within, offering a variety of approaches to health and wellness through acupuncture, yoga, myofascial work and guided meditation. I was the founder of Riverbend Yoga and Meditation Studio in Yarmouth, ME, and lead workshops both locally and around the world. In addition, I am deeply involved with Yoga Medicine, https://yogamedicine.com , as a senior teacher and educator and lead advanced yoga teacher trainings through this partnership. I have worked with Maine Medical Center and Tufts Medical School to provide meditation and resiliency curricula for medical students, residents, physicians and nurses. Lastly, I continue to write on a wide variety of topics spanning disease/dysfunction in the body and how various healing approaches can help with these issues. I also have a deep interest in neuroscience as well as longevity and continue to study, write and teach on these topics as well.

I earned my MD from the Larner School of Medicine at the University of Vermont and did my residency in Emergency Medicine at Maine Medical Center. I earned my B.A. in Economics at Wellesley College. My yoga and myofascial training has been under the tutelage of many gifted teachers including Jacqui Bonwell, Josh Summers, Tiffany Cruikshank, Tom Myers, Johnny Gillespie and the talented TRX course instructors. I trained in acupuncture through the University of New England’s Integrated Structural Acupuncture Course for Physicians with Joe Audette, MD, and Kiiko Matsumoto, Lic. Ac. and now serve as teaching staff for this course. In addition, I have completed Facial Rejuvenation training with Michelle Gellis, La.C. and Shellie Goldstein La. C., and have also studied musculoskeletal acupuncture extensively with Dr. Anthony Lombardi and CMTW.

There are many different approaches to and traditions of healing and wellness and I believe we can integrate these systems to arrive at what we are all striving for: happy, healthy and fulfilling lives.

In my free time, I love to read, cook, knit, run, and play with my family and dogs.
