Releasing the Diaphragm and Muscles of Respiration

Fully moving our diaphragm when we breathe not only lets us take in a fuller breath, it allows us to slow down our breathing, allowing for more parasympathetic dominance which can calm the body, and allow for recovery, restoration, and better digestion. In Chinese medicine, we know that the diaphragm is intricately linked to the movement of Qi and blood through the ‘triple burner’ or San Jiao. The practice of full diaphragmatic breathing allows us to create and distribute Qi and blood from the air we breathe, the food we eat and the circulation we create to better nourish ourselves. This is a great stand alone practice but also is a great way to prepare for a seated meditation practice. Props: yoga mat and block or cushion, small myofascial release ball.
